Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about UpNext DJ for mobile and Mac

πŸš€ Getting Started

Do I need the Mac app or can I use my iPhone?

+

Both work, but serve different purposes:

  • iPhone App: Perfect for DJs on the go. Create events, manage requests, and export playlists. Available on the App Store.
  • Mac App: Professional desktop experience. Scan your entire music library, advanced analytics, Top 100 charts, and export to any DJ software. Download here.

Your events sync automatically between devices! Start an event on Mac and manage it from your iPhone during the gig.

Do my guests need to download an app?

+

Yes! Guests need to download the free UpNext DJ app from the Apple App Store.

Once installed, they scan your QR code or enter the 6-letter event code to join your event and start making requests. The app is free and works on any iPhone or iPad.

+

Launch special! Use promo code FREEACCESS to get your first month completely free.

This works on all subscription tiers:

  • Monthly ($9.99/month) - First month free
  • Yearly ($99/year) - First month free

⚑ Features & Functionality

How does the voting system work?

+

The voting system lets guests boost their favorite song requests:

  • 1 Vote Per Song: Each guest gets 1 vote for each song request to boost it
  • Purchase More Votes: Guests can buy additional vote credits to give extra support to their favorite requests
  • Real-Time Rankings: Songs with more votes rise to the top of the queue
  • Crowd-Driven: The most popular requests naturally float to the top

Requests automatically sort by vote count, so the crowd decides what plays next!

Can I import playlists into an event?

+

Yes! On the Mac app, you can import playlists from:

  • M3U/M3U8 files (from any DJ software)
  • CSV files with song lists

This is perfect for pre-loading an event with your go-to tracks or a client's must-play list. Guests can then request additional songs on top of your pre-loaded playlist!

What's clean-only mode?

+

Clean-only mode filters explicit content, perfect for family-friendly events like weddings or corporate parties.

When enabled:

  • Guests only see clean versions when searching
  • Explicit songs are blocked from requests
  • Exports only include clean versions

Enable it when creating an event or toggle it on later in event settings.

What are the Top 100 charts?

+

The Top 100 charts show the most requested songs, helping you build data-driven playlists:

  • My Events Top 100: Most requested songs across YOUR events only
  • All Events Top 100: Trending songs from ALL DJs using UpNext globally

Export any chart to M3U8 or CSV to use as a starting playlist for future events. Know what's popular before you even arrive!

Charts are only available in the Mac app.

What are Tag-Based Top 100 Charts?

+

Tag-based charts let you see the most requested songs by event type - perfect for genre-specific setlists!

Available Event Types:

  • πŸ’’ Weddings: Top 100 songs requested at wedding receptions worldwide
  • πŸŽ“ School Dances: Most popular tracks at proms, homecoming, and school events
  • 🏒 Corporate Events: Professional event favorites for company parties and conferences
  • 🎊 Private Parties: Top requests from birthday parties and casual gatherings

Two Views:

  • Global Top 100: See what's trending for that event type from ALL DJs worldwide
  • My Events Top 100: Your personal chart from only YOUR events of that type

Export any tag-based chart to M3U8 or CSV to build the perfect setlist for your next similar event!

Tag charts are only available in the Mac app.

Can I use UpNext DJ with Spotify or Apple Music?

+

Partially:

  • Apple Music Search: Guests can search the Apple Music catalog when making requests (iPhone app only)
  • Apple Music Export: Export event requests directly to an Apple Music playlist
  • Spotify: Not currently integrated for search, but you can export to CSV and manually import to Spotify

For matching: The Mac app scans your local music files (MP3, M4A, FLAC, etc.) to match requests to songs you actually have.

βš™οΈ Technical Requirements

What are the Mac system requirements?

+

Requirements:

  • macOS: 12.0 (Monterey) or later (may work on older versions but unsupported)
  • Developed for: macOS 15.6 (Sequoia) - best performance on latest OS
  • Processor: Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) or Intel
  • RAM: 4GB minimum, 8GB recommended
  • Storage: 100MB for app, plus space for music library cache
  • Internet: Required for real-time sync with guests

The app is a Universal Binary - works natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs!

What audio formats are supported?

+

The Mac app music library scanner supports all common formats:

  • MP3 (.mp3)
  • AAC/M4A (.m4a, .aac)
  • FLAC (.flac)
  • WAV (.wav)
  • AIFF (.aiff, .aif)
  • OGG Vorbis (.ogg)

Metadata (artist, title, album, explicit flag) is read from ID3 tags or iTunes metadata.

Does it work offline?

+

Partially:

  • Events: Require internet for real-time sync with guests
  • Music Library: Scanned offline, but requires internet for initial setup
  • Exports: Can be created offline once library is scanned
  • Charts: Require internet to fetch latest data

For live events, you'll need a stable internet connection so guests can join and make requests.

πŸ”§ Troubleshooting

Guests can't join my event. What's wrong?

+

Common issues:

  • Check your internet: Both you and guests need an active connection
  • Verify the code: Make sure guests are entering the correct 6-letter code (case doesn't matter)
  • QR Code: If scanning doesn't work, have guests manually enter the code
  • Event active: Make sure you didn't delete the event

Music library scan is stuck or slow

+

Tips to speed up scanning:

  • Close other apps to free up CPU and RAM
  • If scanning from an external drive, ensure it's connected via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt (not USB 2.0)
  • Network drives are slower - consider copying music locally
  • Large libraries (50,000+ songs) may take 10-20 minutes

If scanning appears stuck, restart the app and try scanning again.

The app says I need a subscription but I already paid

+

Try these steps:

  • Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to subscribe
  • Quit and relaunch the app to refresh subscription status
  • Check your email for a Stripe receipt confirming payment
  • If subscription was just purchased, wait 1-2 minutes for sync

Requests aren't matching my music library

+

Matching depends on accurate metadata in your music files.

Common issues:

  • Missing metadata: Files need artist and title tags
  • Misspelled tags: "BeyoncΓ©" vs "Beyonce" won't match
  • Incomplete scan: Re-scan your library if you recently added music
  • Different spellings: "feat." vs "ft." can cause mismatches

Tip: Use a metadata editor like MusicBrainz Picard to clean up your tags before scanning.
